Multi-million donation to COPD research

COPD is a complex lung disease that affects millions of people worldwide. The disease is very multifaceted and complex, which requires in-depth research. Research shows that individually adapted exercise can improve patients' quality of life. Sandberg Development therefore donated money to a research project led by Gunilla Westergren-Thorsson that examines how exercise can help patients with the disease.

Research donation for increased knowledge about water

In 2024, Sandberg Development donated 100 million SEK, distributed over a 10-year period, to Malmö University. The donation is directed to the Department of Biomedical Science and researchers active at the research center Biofilms Research Center for Biointerfaces. The investment will fund both basic research and applied research in physical chemistry to promote the development of, new environmentally friendly materials that can quickly break down in water, optimized washing and cleaning methods that can reduce emissions and pollution in water, and protein-based drug formulations.

Kåre Larsson's and Gunnar Sandberg's Research Foundation

Kåre Larsson's and Gunnar Sandberg's Research Foundation, CLRF, was founded in 1997 by Kåre Larsson (1937-2018), professor of food technology at Lund University and world-leading expert on lipid structures, and Gunnar Sandberg (1923-2007), entrepreneur and founder of Elektro-Sandberg and Sandberg Development and honorary Doctor of Medicine at Lund University.

Kåre Larsson made a groundbreaking scientific discovery of cubic liquid crystalline nanoparticles, Cubosomes. These have been commercialized by what is today the publicly listed company Camurus and form the basis for the foundation which is based on both Kåre Larsson's shareholding in Camurus and a donation from Gunnar Sandberg.

The founders' vision was to create multidisciplinary research in lipid science with focus on the biophysics and chemistry of lipids, their structure and composition in relation to their function in biological systems and biomedical/clinical applications.

The research foundation is a symbol of Kåre Larsson's and Gunnar Sandberg's commitment and friendship. After the founders' passing, the foundation is run by their respective sons Marcus Larsson and Per Sandberg, who both are on the foundation's board.
